What is SoCal Grassroots?

SoCal Grassroots is a volunteer organization which grew out of the former Kerry CA after the November 2004 election. Many grassroots activists across Southern California recognized the need to continue their efforts to revitalize the Democratic Party, creating an organization which is purposefully non-partisan so that it may be open to anyone interested in helping to move our society towards true equality, justice and democratic ideas, regardless of party affiliation.

Revitalize the Democratic Party? How do you plan to do that?

With a vision and a mission.

Vision:  SoCal Grassroots will have a positive and substantial impact on the Democratic Party on a national level.

Mission:  SoCal Grassroots will make a dramatic impact at the local level, which will give our people a chance to help reinvigorate the local and state Democratic Party in a positive way.

We have set a number of goals to achieve our vision and complete our mission, including: crafting a unified democratic message; building a precinct organization; recruiting and developing an active membership.

SoCal Grassroots strongly believes that we, as concerned and active citizens, can affect such changes without straying from the core values that define, not only our organization, but the Democratic Party specifically and the American people in general. Those values are integrity, reform, community, effective action, inclusiveness and diversity.

Sounds terrific! How can I help?

SoCal Grassroots has many opportunities for people who are interested in helping to improve the lives of their fellow Californians and Americans. There is always a call for volunteers from our regional groups and action committees -- contact your local group or our action committee chairs for further information.

If you don’t have the time to volunteer (let’s face it – life is busier than ever for all of us), but would still like to contribute, please donate via ActBlue. We are working on disseminating information, putting together exciting events and sending our representatives to important hearings that impact the lives of every one of us, but all of that requires money. $100, $50, even $5 or $1 will help us to get the word out and to achieve our goals. (Of course, if you’d like to donate more than $100, we’d happily accept it.) ActBlue is the best way to contribute to SoCal Grassroots.

Another very important way to help -- perhaps the most important way -- is to make sure that you are registered to vote. 2006 is one of the most important congressional election years and we must do what we can to turn Congress blue. Voting is a key step in regaining a Democratic majority in the House and the Senate.

I like to make phone calls/write letters/send e-mails. Where do I go?

We will often have action alerts in our weekly newsletter, on our home page (where you can also sign up to receive our newsletter or special action alerts) or on our SoCal Grassroots Blog. Also check in regularly with the SoCal Grassroots regional group in your area - many regions have actions specific to their areas.

I have a thing for swag. Are there t-shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, etc. available?

Many local groups will have buttons, bumper stickers, lawn signs, and t-shirts at their voter registration tables at local farmers markets, malls, and fairs. Your donation helps support their campaign work. There is a list of some of the areas where tabling will occur on our event calendar.

Where can I find out about the next big SoCal Grassroots event?

You’re in luck-- we have a calendar of events sure to fill your days and evenings with political goodness.
